Letter From The Editor

Hello and Happy Holidays from The Plate Lady of Tampa Bay and staff,

We hope you are enjoying the season and not letting the cold weather dampen your spirits. We are hard at work this month trying to fill orders as quickly as possible. Although weather conditions and the tremendous workload of the season have slowed shipping down a little, there is still a spirit of optimism and cheer as we continue to provide personalized service to each and every one of our customers. We are always happy to put a rush on new orders, with no extra charge, and to check on the status of orders for customers who have already ordered. There will, however, be a cut off point for getting packages out before Christmas, so please place your order early to avoid any delays.

You may have noticed that there was not a November Newsletter published. We have decided to only publish newsletters every two months from now on, due to time constraints, however, we will continue to provide artist's profiles with our newsletters, for your reading enjoyment.

Our Artist of The Month for December is Edna Hibel. You can read her Artist’s Profile below to learn more about her life and her art. You can also view a selection of her art on our Edna Hibel Art Plate Gallery webpage at http://theplatelady.com/hibel.htm

Artist's Profile: Edna Hibel

Edna Hibel was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1917. Edna is an internationally renowned artist best known for her sensitive portrayals of women and children from all cultures. Her art can be found in many of America’s most outstanding universities and public museums. Exhibitions of her work can also be found in major museums and galleries throughout the world.

Edna Hibel graduated from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in 1939 and in 1940 the Boston Museum of Fine Arts purchased one of her paintings for its permanent collection, making Edna the youngest artist at the time to be so honored by a major American museum. A lifelong student of art, she uses the mediums of oil painting, drawing, lithography, serigraphy, etching, and sculpture in bronze, crystal, and porcelain to create her exquisite creations.

Edna has been exhibited in prestigious museums and galleries all over the world under the royal patronage of Count and Countess Bernadotte of Germany, Count Thor Bonde of Sweden, Prince and the late Princess Rainier of Monaco and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England.
In her nearly 8 decades as an artist, Edna has received many awards including the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts, the Lifetime Achievement Award from “Women in the Visual Arts,” the Ruth B. Sturtevant Traveling Fellowship for study and painting in Mexico, and many humanitarian honors for her more than one half century in raising donations for children’s and medical charities as well as medals of honor from Pope John Paul II and the late Belgian King Baudouin. She is the only living American woman to have a non-profit public museum dedicated to her art.

Edna’s fine art and humanitarian awards also include medals of honor and citations from numerous heads of state, academic institutions, and religions. She is widely known as an ambassador for world peace, using her humanistic and compassionate work to bring peace through cultural understanding between China and the United States, Yugoslavia and the United States and Russia and the United States with her “Golden Bridge” and “Peace Through Wisdom” exhibits in those countries.

Edna is also the only foreign artist to twice exhibit her work in the Soviet Union, and the only foreign woman to produce a television documentary in that country, “Hibel’s Russian Palette”. That documentary was developed during her trips and art shows in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. She was also recognized for promoting love and understanding throughout the world, with an honorary doctorate degree from the University for Peace in Costa Rica.

Edna Hibel is one of our good neighbors here in Florida. She has been a resident of Palm Beach County for the past 35 years and she appears at book signing events throughout America on a regular basis.
