Displaying
Large Plate Collections
Collecting the plates in an annual series can result in a
large collection that can be difficult to display.
Often the plates may end up stored in backs of closets, only
to be taken out once a year, or maybe not at all.
The usual solution is to hang the plates on an interior wall,
so they can be viewed and enjoyed throughout the year. However,
hanging large numbers of plates might be a problem in any
interior space, because they can dominate the room.
Too much of a good thing is sometimes overwhelming.
The solution is to hang them on the exterior of your home.
Home exterior surfaces may be relatively free of decoration
and can be suitable for plate hanging if they are hung in
a veranda, an enclosure, or a sheltered area.
There are risks certainly to hanging plates outside, so it
is wise to evaluate the risks before deciding on this type
of display.
However the point of hanging the plates is so you can enjoy
all your plates together all the time, and that may be worth
some risk, if the alternative is to never see all of them
together, ever.
The collector who owns the plates in the following pictures
hung 48 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plates the full length
of her veranda, over the front door and then on either side
of the door.

Before this, she never saw all her plates at one time. They
just went into storage in a closet, one by one, each year.
Now she sees all her plates every time she goes out the door.
Although she did hang them at Christmas time, she intends
to leave them up hanging on the veranda indefinitely, all
year long, just adding one more plate each year.
There are many ways a large number of plates can be grouped.
Symmetrical groupings are the most pleasing to the eye, but
other than that you can let your imagination run wild.
First lay the plates down on the floor to create your pattern
and when you are satisfied transfer that pattern up onto the
wall.
All you need is a measuring tape, a level, appropriate plate
hangers, and a discerning eye.
Enjoy!
